Overview

A brief introduction to Arapaho Roosevelt National Forests Pawnee Ng

The Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland (ARP) in northern Colorado offer a diverse landscape for camping enthusiasts, featuring majestic mountains, rolling hills, and expansive grasslands. Spanning over 1.5 million acres, ARP is known for its variety of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, attracting approximately 7.5 million visitors annually.

Campgrounds

ARP is home to more than 50 developed campgrounds, catering to a range of camping preferences. Many campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis, while others accept reservations up to six months in advance through recreation.gov. Campgrounds vary in amenities and site availability, with options suitable for tents, RVs, and group camping. Key campgrounds include:

Boulder Ranger District: Notable campgrounds such as Camp Dick, Kelly Dahl, and Peaceful Valley, with elevations ranging from 8,350 to 10,400 feet.

Canyon Lakes Ranger District: Features campgrounds like Ansel Watrous and Dowdy Lake, with amenities for families and groups.

Clear Creek Ranger District: Includes Clear Lake and Cold Springs, ideal for those seeking a scenic, mountainous camping experience.

Sulphur Ranger District: Offers access to the Arapaho National Recreation Area, with facilities for boaters and fishing enthusiasts.

Pawnee National Grassland: Provides unique camping experiences in a grassland setting, with campgrounds like Crow Valley.

Reservations and Availability

Reservations for campgrounds can be made through recreation.gov, with the best practice being to book six months in advance. Most campgrounds require guests to be present on the first night of their stay. During peak seasons, especially weekends in summer, campsites fill quickly, so planning is essential. First-come, first-served sites can be found, but visitors should arrive early to secure a spot.

Camping Regulations and Amenities

When camping at ARP, it's important to adhere to regulations regarding campfires, waste disposal, and wildlife interactions. Fire restrictions may apply depending on current fire conditions, so checking for updates is essential. Most campgrounds provide basic amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets, but water availability may vary, so visitors should bring adequate supplies.

Recreational Opportunities

In addition to camping, ARP offers a wealth of outdoor activities:

Hiking and Biking: Trails range from easy to challenging, with opportunities for both hiking and mountain biking.

Wildlife Viewing: The diverse habitats support a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and numerous bird species.

Fishing and Hunting: Many areas within the forests are open to fishing and hunting, with specific regulations to follow.

Winter Sports: In winter, the area is popular for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

Wilderness Areas

ARP encompasses ten designated wilderness areas, providing pristine environments for visitors seeking solitude and natural beauty. These include the Indian Peaks Wilderness and Mount Evans Wilderness, known for their breathtaking views and untouched landscapes.

Conclusion

Camping at the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland offers an unforgettable experience amid Colorado’s stunning natural scenery. With ample camping options, diverse recreational activities, and rich wildlife, ARP is a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether seeking a peaceful retreat in the mountains or an adventurous exploration of the grasslands, ARP provides a perfect backdrop for a memorable camping experience.

Always lovely!

No matter if Spring, Summer, or Fall, this place is beautiful and relaxing. The electric sites in a National Campground are a plus! Nice 2 mile hike around stunning, boulder-filled lake. Great for kayak, paddle board, fishing boat. And no mountain pass to navigate getting there!

Secret hideaway

I have trouble leaving a good review for this place because it is SO amazing and I don’t want everybody to know about it! Literally has every thing you could want. We have stayed here several years in a row now and have a tradition staying on Roaring Fork Loop. Beautiful lake views from the campground as well as mountain views and a nearby waterfall. Just make sure you are prepared for high winds if you are close to the lake as storm, sometimes roll in quickly but then do move out quickly as well.

Serene Getaway

A beautiful oasis among the pines! Sites are spread out enough that you don't feel like you're camping with a ton of people. Make sure to fill your fresh water tanks before you arrive as they only provide electric. 15, 30 and 50 amp service available.

Peaceful Valley Campground has Moose

We've seen lots of moose at Peaceful Valley. They just wander through the camp sites during the night. So cool.

Camp Dick is great for hiking, 4-wheeling

We go to Camp Dick every summer. Sometimes with our ATV, and sometimes just to hike and relax.
