A hidden gem
I consider Manning Park a hidden gem. I say so, because it allows you access to the backcountry right from the parking lot, the area is pristine wilderness, and it's reasonably easy to book.
My wife and I booked a two-night stay at Buckhorn campground (this is in the backcountry). We didn't need to scan for cancellations, nor was there any challenge in booking a spot. Admittedly this was for a mid-week stay.
The alpine area we accessed is across the highway from the lodge. You drive up for approximately 15 minutes and can then park right at the trailhead. (Avoid leaving valuables in your car as break-ins are common in this parking lot.)
From there, it's a 4 km walk downhill to Buckhorn Campground. This campground is situated in a nice open area, close to water sources. It has ample bear cashes as well as an enclosed structure in which you can prep your meals. If memory serves there are roughly 24 wooden tent pads available for campers.
In my opinion, Buckhorn is the perfect base camp. From there, you can hike further to see the Three Brothers which are gorgeous. You can also continue your trek through to Kicking Horse campground and beyond.
We we visited E.C. Manning’s backcountry in early July. There were small patches of snow and some mosquitoes. Wildflowers were starting to come into bloom. We spotted ground squirrels, a deer, a rabbit, and countless birds.
Even a couple of days of hiking in Manning's back country is a reminder of how lucky we are to have such amazing parks surrounding us.
