A brief introduction to Killarney Provincial Park
Killarney Provincial Park is a provincial park in central Ontario, Canada.
The park contains just one campground at the George Lake entrance as it is primarily a wilderness park. There are few facilities in order to allow visitors a chance to experience the solitude and beauty of its undisturbed natural setting. It has a number of hiking trails and canoe-in back-country camping. The canoe routes include well maintained portages between lakes. The campground includes six heated yurts which have electric lighting, a power outlet, a propane barbecue and bunk beds.
Situated on the north shore of Georgian Bay in the municipality of Killarney, the park straddles the La Cloche range, large rounded white quartzite hills that dominate the landscape. The white peaks and cliffs contrast with the pine and hardwood forests and the boggy lowlands that surround the park's many lakes.
Quartzite is weather-resistant and contains few nutrient-bearing minerals. Soils, where present, tend to be shallow and infertile. Very stony sandy loam is the most common soil texture reported. Podzol profile development is usual in well-drained situations. Mineral-rich rock types such as diabase and limestone occur locally and the soils that have developed over them support some of the park's more luxuriant vegetation.
The park lies within the Eastern forest-boreal transition ecoregion, so there is a wide variety of plant life. The park is home to moose, deer, black bears, wolves, lynx, bobcats, martens, and beavers along with over 20 species of reptiles and amphibians. Over 100 species of birds breed, nest or rest within park boundaries.

Remote but worth the drive
Campnab helped us secure a camp spot at Killarney Provincial Park at the George Lake Campground. We were surprised how remote of a drive it was, glad we got an early start on the day, and stop for supplies long before we reached the park.
Our first stop was to the Killarney Visitor Center where the rangers provided helpful information, especially regarding fishing regulations, and the lake of fish in George Lake.
We were advised to head to Chikanishing Trail to find the 'put in' for our kayak. From here we navigated Georgian Bay along the coast, eventually paddling to 'Dave's Bay' an enjoyable afternoon of fishing !
We also spent one afternoon driving to the end of the peninsula where we took photos of the Big Dipper, the world's largest paddle (22,000 lbs 110 feet long) !
The campsite had all the necessities including water, outhouses, showers and trash bins.

Opening week
This is a very popular campground for Canoeing, Kayaking and backcountry camping. It is a very scenic campground with challenging hiking trails a George Lake is perfect for Canoeing and Kayaking.
Cons: When we arrived we found out that the hot water system was unavailable at the comfort station and therefore the showers were not available for use. There seemed to be very little effort being made to rectify this issue. There are no electric sites available for use, the water in the campground area is not potable, the sites are well drained but smallish, the park itself is quite remote being 60+ kilometers from the main highway, albeit the town of Killarney is 10 minutes away and you have access to a general store, gas, restaurants etc. There is also an outfitters in the area where you can rent your canoes or kayaks. The equipment is staged at George Lake and the outfitters will supply you with lifejackets etc. The staff if very friendly and helpful.
In conclusion, this is a must see park with great views and wonderful canoeing and hiking experiences. I would advise that you do your research before venturing out to ensure this park is the park for you.
