Overview

A brief introduction to New Hogan Lake

Less than an hour east of Stockton near the historic gold rush towns of the California Mother Lode. This scenic setting in the Sierra Nevada foothills boasts exciting fishing, waterskiing, and hiking. From Stockton 30 miles east via CA Highway 26.

New Hogan Lake is an artificial lake in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Calaveras County, California, about 30 miles (48.3 km) northeast of Stockton. It is formed by New Hogan Dam on the Calaveras River, whose North and South forks combine just upstream of the lake, and has a capacity of 317,000 acre⋅ft (391,000,000 m3). The earth-fill dam, completed in 1963, is 210 feet (64.0 m) high from the crest of the dam to the original streambed. The reservoir was first filled in 1965. There is a small hydroelectric plant at its base. It is owned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and provides flood protection, drinking water, electricity and water for irrigation. There is also recreation available, such as boating, fishing, water skiing and camping.

Acorn Campground

It was our first time at this new camp ground. We went in July 2023 and it was HOT! But, thank goodness for the water! We had a blast!! Family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids-teenagers). We really enjoyed our experience here and will be back! A very positive experience! The only downfall I have to say is that the bathroom closest to our campsite was out of service at the time of our visit. This really was an inconvenience for us since we were tent camping, but thankfully there was another bathroom nearby. Besides the bathroom inconvenience, it was perfect! Looking forward to our next visit!!
