We’re working on a glossary of camping terms

I’m one of the two people working on Campnab. I like to run, ski, bike, and camp with my family and friends. (I love saunas.)

Find me:

Earlier this year, a member asked me a question about a particular kind of campsite. I was stumped by this request and ended up doing some research for them. Along the way, I started thinking that I should bone-up on these terms.

I’m a bit of a nerd (the old and uncool kind), which led me to compile a rather lengthy list of words related to camping. I then worked to describe each one as succinctly as possible.

Turns out that this is quite time-consuming and there are a lot—I mean A LOT—of terms to get through. There are common camping words, but these quickly expand when you look at RVing terminology, overlanding, boondocking, backcountry camping, and so on.

Our first pass covers around 500 terms (give or take)… which is about half-way through the list we’ve compiled. There are gaps, missing terms, and probably some errors. It’s a start, though.

So, if you’re baffled by baffles, think an iron ranger is a metal band, and figure a honeywagon smells like honey, you might want to check out Campnab’s Pretty Darned Useful Glossary of Camping Terms.
