Overview

A brief introduction to John Day Lock And Dam Lake Umatilla

John Day Dam is 216 miles upstream from the mouth of the Columbia River and located at Exit 109 off Interstate 84 in Oregon. The project consists of a navigation lock, spillway, smolt monitoring facility, powerhouse and fish-passage facilities on both shores. Many recreation opportunities are available along the shores of Lake Umatilla and on the John Day River, such as boating, fishing, swimming and sail boarding.

The John Day Dam is a concrete gravity run-of-the-river dam spanning the Columbia River in the northwestern United States. The dam features a navigation lock plus fish ladders on both sides. The John Day Lock has the highest lift (110 feet) of any U.S. lock. The reservoir impounded by the dam is Lake Umatilla, and it runs 76.4 miles (123 kilometers) up the river channel to the foot of the McNary Dam.
