Admiral John Byng (baptised 29 October 1704 – 14 March 1757) was a Royal Navy officer and a politician. Joining the Navy at thirteen, he would participate in battles, such as the Battle of Cape Passaro, and gain a reputation as a solid officer—eventually, a vice-admiral. Amidst his naval career, he served as Commodore-Governor of Newfoundland Colony in 1742, and the Commander-in-Chief, Leith, from 1745 to 1746, and he was a member of Parliament from 1751 to his death.
During the Battle of Minorca, the first battle of the Seven Years' War, Byng commanded a fleet of ships which was hastily assembled both physically and as a team. The battle was lost, and the island was conquered by the French. Court-martialed for failing to relieve St. Philip's Castle, a British garrison on Minorca which had been besieged, Byng was found guilty of failing to "do his utmost", and sentenced to death. With his pleas for clemency denied, he was executed by firing squad nine months after the battle.
