I’m one of the two people working on Campnab. I like to run, ski, bike, and camp with my family and friends. (I love saunas.)

Find me:

The summer is drawing to a close, and what a nice one it’s been! We hope you and your families were able to get outside this summer and spend some time in a forest, on a mountain, dipping in a lake, or singing songs around a campfire!

Our summer was busy—as it always is. We welcomed new members to Campnab and made it a priority to be available for questions, offer help, and fix the occasional bugs that popped up. As a two-person operation, this involves a little flexibility. I sometimes had to explain to callers that I was literally on a mountain when they rang me up. Sometimes, I was asleep (some of you call awfully early in the morning) or sitting on the toilet when calls came in. I generally don’t share this specific information, though. 😉

Eric S. and his family took a few brief trips to local parks, including Golden Ears Provincial Park and their annual Alice Lake group mountain biking trip with friends. He and his wife Kim also walked around Portugal a bit while remotely monitoring system performance. (I’m always thrilled when things run smoothly while he’s away.)

My wife, sons, nephew Ben, and I travelled to Pacific Rim National Park and later Rathtrevor Provincial Park (both trips possible via cancellations spotted by Campnab scans 🎉). The boys tried—and loved—surfing. We also got some time at our in-laws’ cottage at Stoney Lake and at my Mom and Dad’s home in Prince George. We had many saunas, which made all of us happy!

Today’s post is your seasonal reminder to cancel Campnab if you don’t need service for the autumn months. To do so, visit your plan page and click “Cancel your plan”. Alternatively, you can hibernate your plan. Hibernating is much like cancelling, but allows you to set a date for service to resume.

I’m still hoping to sneak in a couple of trips this fall. My family managed to get waterfront spots at Cultus Lake last Thanksgiving. The weather was balmy for that time of year, with daytime highs around 28°C (82°F). We took those days easy, had a sauna each night, and gazed at the moon and stars before falling into a deep sleep. “Deep” is a relative term. For me, it seems to involve waking up at 2:00 in the morning to go pee. (Apparently, this is normal for those in my “advaned” age group.)

Admittedly, that sort of warm weather is less common as winter nears. Nevertheless, fall camping can be exceptional with fewer mosquitos, campfire bans lifting, and less competition for good campsites. So, if you haven’t camped in the fall, I highly recommend giving it a try. Just pack accordingly and possibly upgrade your sleeping bag to a winter-rated one.

Aside from some little getaways and bike rides, Eric S. and I are now in build-and-fix mode. As scan activity slows, we can dedicate more time to improving systems performance, introducing scanning for additional regions, and developing new features you’ve requested. We never complete as many of these as we’d like, but we keep picking away at such improvements. We’ll let you know what’s new sometime in early January.

For all of you who joined Campnab this season, welcome! To all those who returned, we’re grateful for rejoining! It means a lot to us to have your support—and to keep hearing that our app helped with your camping plans.

We hope to see you again next season!
