Feels like being dropped into a movie set
Wonderful campground about two miles east of Highway 101. The setting here is so idyllic, you might be forgiven for thinking that you've wandered into an elaborate set for Avatar II. Our campsite was on the west side of the northern loop, close to the creek, where we enjoyed some afternoon sun. Walking through the loops, we saw that many sites occupy multiple levels with short flights of stairs from the parking pad to the firepit and table. Some had another level beyond that, up to a flat spot for a tent. Overall, it gave the campground a certain charm and reminded me of the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse at Disneyland.
The grounds themselves were well-managed. The staff was friendly, helpful, and available when needed. The bathrooms were clean, as campground bathrooms go, and kept in good repair.
The grounds are divided into two loops. The southern section has more redwoods and some truly amazing old-growth stumps. In the north, the forest is more mixed. Both, though, feature lush undergrowth that helps to provide a sense of privacy between sites.
We found Mill Creek to be a good jumping off point for all four parks in the area. Crescent City is a short drive away for emergency supplies, or to get back into cell phone range.
